AMHERST, N.Y. -
Ben Weiss (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) won the third set of his match at No. 4 singles to clinch a 5-4 victory for the Oswego State men's tennis team (2-4) over Daemen College (3-8) Saturday night. Weiss won the first set against Mike Obermeier, 6-3, but dropped the second set after losing the tiebreaker 8-6 to force the decisive third set.
The Lakers picked up two points at doubles starting at No. 3 doubles when
Ben Schleider (Sr., Washingtonville, N.Y.) and
Sam Carges (Sr., Brockport, N.Y.) posted a 8-6 win. At No. 2 doubles,
Tim Van Hine, Jr. (So., Apalachin, N.Y.) and
Dillon Corbett (Sr., Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) erased a 7-3 deficit, saving three match points, before cruising through the tiebreaker, 7-0, as Oswego State took a 2-1 lead at the end of doubles play.
Max McCune (Jr., Hilton, N.Y.) won the first Laker singles point at the No. 5 position when he defeated Brad Casper, 6-2, 6-3. As singles play wore on, Daemen took a 4-3 lead with matches remaining at No. 2 and No. 4. Van Hine, Jr. kept Oswego State's hopes alive when he closed out a hard fought, straight set win over Zach Kinnaird after posting a score of 6-4, 7-6 (5) before Weiss posted his victory.
The Lakers travel to Keuka on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match.
