BOX SCORECazenovia, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team opened its SUNYAC schedule with a 10-8 loss to Fredonia on Saturday morning at Cazenovia College. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in conference competition while the Blue Devils improve to 6-2, 1-0.
Oswego started the game with two goals in the first 4:11.
Kassie Kleine scored her first of three goals on the day at 27:23 to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage.
Emily Lange's 15th goal of the year under two minutes later pushed the Oswego advantage to two.
Marissa Cussins then made it a 2-1 game with Fredonia's first goal, before Kleine scored her second of the game to keep the Laker margin at two, 3-1.
Kleine's sister, Kristie Kleine, a member of the Blue Devils, scored a goal for Fredonia at 15:16 to shrink the Laker lead to one.
Oswego's leading point-getter on the season,
Erannan Shattuck, scored the team's next goal to again stretch the lead to two goals at 4-2. Fredonia then went on a three-goal run, including two tallies from Cussins and another from Kliene's other sister, Katie Kleine.
With the Blue Devils leading for the first time 5-4, Kleine scored her third of the half to knot the game at 5-5. That score would hold through to the halftime.
Fredonia came out of the half ready to take the lead for good, however, scoring the next 30 minutes first five goals for a 10-5 advantage.
Oswego would score the game's next three goals as it tried to mount a comeback but came up just short.
Shattuck and Kleine both led the Lakers with three points, with Shattuck's coming on two goals and an assist. Also finishing with points for the Oswego was
Emily Lange,
Esther Gabriel and
Candace Tarana, all with one goal apiece.
Gabriel and Lange led the team on the draw, each winning three.
Nikki Grecco took just her second loss in goal this season, falling to 5-2 with six saves on the morning.
Oswego will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to take on the nationally-ranked Geneseo Knights.
