Oswego Outdone by Geneseo in Saturday Doubleheader

BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team dropped both its contests with Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at Donald S. Ray Middle School. After the loss, Oswego sits at 4-11 on the year and 1-7 in SUNYAC play while Geneseo moves to 8-8, 5-3.

GAME ONE – Geneseo 10, Oswego 2:

A six-run third inning spoiled the Lakers plans for a win, putting the Cardinals up 8-0. Oswego scored runs in each of the next two innings but the Knights added runs in the fifth and seventh innings to cement the 10-2 victory.

Katie Bredin and Sammie Schroeter each finished with two hits, with Schroeter turning in a run scored and a RBI on a solo home run. Alexandra McKay also hit a bases-empty shot while earning two walks in the contest.

Alexis Nasca finished 1-for-3 at the plate and threw five-innings of relief for the Lakers, allowing no earned runs.

Katie Heselden took the loss on the rubber, going two innings and allowing eight runs.

GAME TWO – Geneseo 9, Oswego 4:

Geneseo put a run on the board in the top of the first inning but Nasca answered the challenge in the bottom half, drilling a pitch over the fence in center field to knot the game at 1-1. The Knights then scored four runs in the second to take a 5-1 advantage.

Oswego once again would try to match the challenge, cutting the lead to just one with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Bredin led off with an infield single and the speedy Schroeter tried to sacrifice Bredin to second but was quicker than the defense, beating the throw to first for a single. Nasca then drove in Bredin with a single to left center. McKay drove in the innings second run with a single to center before Jessie Terrano, who pinch ran in the frame, scored from third as the Knights tried to catch McKay stealing.

With the score at 5-4, Oswego could not muster anymore runs as Geneseo tacked on four to earn the win.

Eight different Lakers finished with hits in the game, with Nasca going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Bredin, Schroeter, McKay, Ashley Lyman, Melissa Mulvaney, Deanna Apps and Noelle White all collected one hit apiece.

Heselden threw 5.1 innings of relief, allowing four runs on seven hits. Alexandria Connelly took the loss, going 1.2 frames and letting up four runs.

Oswego will return to action at 10 a.m. on Sunday as it hosts Plattsburgh at Ray Middle School in Baldwinsville, N.Y.
