Softball Opens Conference Play with Two Losses at Oneonta

Oneonta, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team opened its conference schedule with two losses in a doubleheader at Oneonta on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Lakers are now 3-6 overall and 0-2 in SUNYAC play while Oneonta improves to 13-3, 4-0.

GAME ONE: Oneonta 5, Oswego 3:

Deanna Apps put the Lakers on the board first with a single to right center in the third inning, driving in Laura Kahn. The Red Dragons answered with three runs in the bottom of the same inning but Oswego was at it again in the top of the next frame.

Dana Taglioni singled on a bunt towards third, scoring Katie Bredin to cut the lead to 3-2. Once again, however, Oneonta would tack on a run in the same inning as a double would give the host a 4-2 advantage.

The Lakers put the pressure on the Red Dragons in the fifth by shaving the margin to one run again at 4-3 as Justine Abramowski served a base knock through the middle to send Alexis Nasca to the plate.

In the bottom of the fifth, Oswego posted an insurance run and would hold that lead over the final two innings to nab the win.

Alexandria Connelly earned the start in the circle and took a loss, allowing four runs on six in 3.1 innings of work. Katie Heselden worked 2.2 hitless innings of relief.

Bredin finished 3-for-4 with a run scored while Taglioni and Justine Abramowski each had two hits.

GAME TWO:  Oneonta 9, Oswego 1:

Oswego could only muster a run in the second game of the doubleheader, as Nasca drove in Noelle White in the fifth inning. The Lakers finished with two hits, with Nasca earning both, including a double.

White reached base by virtue of a walk. Ashley Lyman also earned first with a base on balls in the contest.

Heselden threw 1.1 innings while Nasca took the rubber for the other 2.2. Each pitcher surrendered three earned runs in their outings with Nasca fanning one batter.

Oswego will return to the diamond at 10 a.m. on Sunday for a doubleheader with New Paltz .
