MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Oswego State wrestling team fell in each of its three matches at the Wesleyan University Quad on Sunday afternoon. Oswego dropped its first bout to the host Cardinals 33-12 then lost a 46-3 contest to nationally-ranked Johnson & Wales University. Its final dual of the day was a 37-18 defeat at the hands of Hunter College.
In the first test of the day,
Scott Bova and
Benjamin Lewis each managed victories while
Kevin Ramkishun picked up six team points with a forfeit in the 125-pound weight class. Bova showed no signs of rust after missing nearly a month of battling an injury, collecting a win by a convincing 9-2 decision at 184. Lewis was able to capture his first triumph of the 2014-15 campaign, as the 149-pounder earned a 9-6 win over Zach Larabee in the final bout of the dual.
Later in the afternoon, Oswego faced #15 Johnson & Wales, with Bova making it a perfect 2-0 as an individual on the day. The senior defeated his Wildcat counterpart Pete Hailer by a 6-4 count.
For the final battle of the day, the Lakers won three matches, all by falls. Lewis recorded his second win of the day with a pin with just six seconds remaining in the second period. Also winning by fall was newcomer
David Almaviva, who, after cashing in two victories in his first two bouts as a Laker, was out for a few weeks due to injury. The 141-pounder pinned his opponent before the match could carry into the second period, earning his third win of the year in just 2:45.
The other win by fall was the 184-pound Bova, ending the match by fall prior to the end of the third at 5:48. With the three victories, Bova moves to 18-5 on the year.
The Lakers will now have a few weeks of preparation before heading to the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Sunday, March 1 where several Oswego wrestlers will try to earn a bid to the NCAA Championship in mid-March. Messiah College will host the regional in Grantham, Pa.
