CLERMONT, Fla. – The Oswego State softball team split its two games on Monday, falling 2-0 against Washington and Jefferson College before defeating UMass Boston 11-9 later in the day. The Lakers record improves to 3-4 on the season.
Game 1Tori Trovato batted .500 (2-for-4), including a triple, in the 2-0 loss to Washington and Jefferson College. Oswego's only other extra base hit came by way of
Jacquie Porreca (2B), who finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate.
Lisa O'Callaghan pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits the entire game and punching out two as well.
Game 2A late push helped Oswego come back to defeat Umass Boston on Monday afternoon.
The team began hot, with
Jessie Terrano scoring on an error early in the first. Trovato would then knock in
Melanie Klauser on a sacrifice fly to right field that would give the Lakers a 2-0 lead at the end of one.
Next inning proved to be similar as the Lakers were able to tack on three more runs giving them a 5-0 lead after the second. After
Gabriella Vertuccio was walked to lead off the inning,
Sam Scott was able to advance her to third as Umass' pitcher made an error on a sacrifice bunt.
Katie Heselden scored Vertuccio the next at bat as she grounded out to the short stop. Terrano then singled in
Sam Scott to earn the second run of the inning. Klauser showed her power as she tripled and allowed Terrano to move home.
After a scorless third inning, Umass Boston was able to tally up seven runs between the top of the fourth and fifth. Oswego would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as
Erin McNeely,
Ashley Lyman and Heselden all picked up an RBI.
The Beacons wouldn't back down though, scoring two more runs in the top of the sixth to give them a 9-8 lead.
The top of the sixth proved to be all Oswego needed as
Erin McNeely tripled, ushering in the eventual game-winning run. Alexandra McKay would single in an insurance run later in the stanza and the Lakers would hold the 11-9 lead to the end.
Starting on the mound for Oswego was
Alexandria Connelly, who was relieved by
Alexis Nasca after 4.1 innings. O'Callaghan would take to the hill at the top of the fifth and earn her second win of the season.
Softball will play again on Tuesday, as the team squares off against the University of Scranton at 9 a.m. and Clarkson University at 11 a.m.
