OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season on Wednesday to the Houghton College Highlanders by a score of 6-3. Oswego is now 1-1 on the year and the Highlanders are 2-1.

After dropping the first two matches at doubles, the Lakers got on the board. The duo of Brian Emigholz and Nick Retzkin was able to defeat the Houghton opposition by a tally of 8-3.

Oswego continued the momentum into solo competition and took a point at first singles. Alex McCarthy won his match in fairly routine fashion and maintained his composure through the straight-sets victory. The senior faced a tough opening set, but earned a break late and secured the set, 7-5. In the second, he kept his foot on the gas and despite facing adversity, cruised to a 6-3 win.

The Lakers other point came in the final singles matchup of the day. Tyler Buxbaum downed his opponent routinely and also in straight sets. The Congers, N.Y. native raced to a double-break lead in the first stanza and held on to win 6-2. In the second set, Buxbaum wore down the other player and earned a steady 6-3 victory.

Men's tennis' final match of the fall season is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Elmira College at the Romney Tennis Courts.
