ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell in its first conference match of the season to the Oneonta Red Dragons on Saturday. The men's team's 124-119 loss, puts it at 0-2 overall; the women sit at the same mark after their 132-105 loss.
Men's swimming and diving fell just short of its opponents in the pool after receiving several strong performances.
Daniel Rodriguez continued his strong start to the season after winning the 500-yard freestyle earlier in the week. This time around he dominated the 1000-yard freestyle event (10:29.40), beating the rest of the field by nearly 30 seconds.
Nicholas Weber won the 200-yard freestyle after coming off a thrashing performance in the 1000-yard freestyle just a few days earlier. The freshman took second place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.25, which collected four points toward the team's total. Teammate
Daniel Rodriguez took first in the event, helping the Lakers take another nine points.
Elsewhere,
Luke Snyder continued his perfect start to the season in the diving events, taking first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter editions. He scored 165 points in the latter, winning by just over two points, and tallied 245.70 in the 1-meter, defeating the next closest diver by 24.4 points.
Back in the pool,
Alexander Davie and
Jay Choi both performed well and earned first-place finishes. Davie took home the 50-yard free event and helped earn 11 more points with a 23.03 split in the Lakers top-finish in the 200-yard free relay. Choi just missed (55.58) beating his season-best time of 55.55 in the 100-yard fly, but won the event nonetheless for the second meet in a row.
On the women's side,
Riley Synan contributed 13 points individually. She won the 100-yard fly by two one-hundredths-of-a-second after narrowly missing the win against RIT. Synan also placed second in the 200-yard free.
Steph Noga (4),
Julia Stiffey (3) and
Kayla Merrill (2) earned a combined nine points toward the team score. The trio placed second, third and fourth in the 500-yard free, respectively.
Oswego will return to the pool to host a meet against Wells College at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Laker Pool.
