OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's tennis team was narrowly edged 5-4 by St. John Fisher College Thursday evening at the Romney Indoor Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 6-2 on the year while the Cardinals improve to 4-4.
After dropping three close doubles matches, the Lakers made a strong attempt to capture the win through pure singles victories.
Sam McGrath had an impressive win at first singles, using all three sets to down his Cardinal opponent. The freshman took the first set 6-4 before barely dropping the second 5-7. In the final set, McGrath showed great stamina, beating his opponent 6-2.
Ryan Korn earned the Lakers first point of the match at third playing a tight-knit 7-6 (7-5) first set, before easily winning the second 6-2.
Alex McCarthy had a similar outcome, beating Fisher's Quinn Magiera 7-5, 6-1.
The final Oswego point came from
Spencer Thorn at sixth singles. Thorn fell behind 5-2 quickly in the first set but came back to win 7-5. His St. John Fisher counterpart took the second set 6-2, but Spencer handled the third set, which was a 10-point tie breaker, with ease (10-4).
Men's tennis will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as the team hosts Utica College.
