OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's tennis team opened up its 2016-17 season with a convincing 7-2 victory over Alfred University on Wednesday at the Romney Tennis Courts. With it being both squad's first match of the year, Oswego is now 1-0 with the Saxons dropping to 0-1.

Oswego took all but one point from both singles and double competition. Senior Alex McCarthy won first singles 6-3, 6-0 before pairing with classmate Spencer Thorn for a 9-7 first doubles victory. The Lakers also scored points at 3-6 singles, starting with Jon Matros' 6-2, 6-0 triumph in the third slot. Nick Retzkin (6-4, 7-6), Christopher Gayvert (6-2, 6-0) and Brian Emigholz (6-1, 6-3) rounded out the winners in the 4-6 spots, respectively.

Matros teamed with John Stanford in the final doubles position, winning 8-3 over their Alfred counterparts for the squad's second doubles point.

The Lakers will now have a few weeks off before returning to action, when they host Houghton College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
