UTICA, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's tennis team defeated the Utica College Pioneers 7-2 at the Turning Stone Dome on Friday afternoon. Oswego moves over .500 with the win, wrapping up the season with a 6-5 record and on a three-match winning streak. Meanwhile, the Pioneers fell to 1-6.
Led by
Chris Gayvert at first singles, the Lakers nearly swept all of the 1-on-1 matches. All of the matches on the day were contested in a superset format with the winner being the first player to win eight games (by two). Gayvert downed his opponent fairly handily, winning by a score of 8-4.
Continuing the Oswego dominance,
Jon Matros,
Tyler Buxbaum,
Jimmy Terzian and
Brian Emigholz won through the first five spots. Utica did not fade early though, as Matros was pushed at second singles. The junior had to battle through a few extra games, before he was able to get the break and earn the victory.
After Buxbaum clinched an 8-4 win, Terzian fought off a charge from Utica's Paul Litvak, taking the match 8-6. In the final singles win for Oswego, Emigholz cruised to an 8-1 victory.
Following a similar script, the Lakers won 2-of-3 doubles contests. Emigholz and Gayvert teamed up to shutout the Utica pairing in the one hole. Later on, Terzian and Buxbaum dominated at third doubles by a score of 8-1.
