ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Oswego State track and field teams opened their outdoor campaign on Sunday at the Rochester Spring Opener hosted by the University of Rochester, turning in a series of competitive performances highlighted by distance success and a strong showing in the relays.

How It Happened
Leading the way for the Lakers was junior standout
Kyra Pellegrino, who delivered a statement performance in the women's 5,000 meters. Pellegrino clocked in at 18:04.93, good for a fifth-place finish in a deep field while also hitting the AARTFC qualifying standard. Her time was good enough for second all-time in Oswego history. Teammate Jessica Torrey followed with a solid effort of her own, finishing 19th in 20:41.14.
On the track, Oswego saw contributions across multiple events. In the women's 400-meter dash, Angelina Buttigieg paced the Lakers with a time of 1:11.67, while
Grace Stevens represented Oswego in the 800 meters. In the 1,500 meters,
Julay Mustafa and
Julia Weaver each logged valuable early-season marks.
The women's 4x400 relay team of
Sabrina Schmitt,
Jenna Stevens,
Lily Gaede, and
Alannah Edwards combined to post a time of 4:53.17, gaining experience against strong regional competition.
In the field, Kayleigh Durso turned in a well-rounded day, finishing fifth in the high jump (1.39m), 11th in the long jump (4.42m), and ninth in the shot put (8.42m), showcasing her versatility.
On the men's side, the Lakers found success in both individual and relay events. The 4x400 relay team of
Cory Morton,
Soren Wolford, Jeffrey Simmons, and
Darnell Johnson delivered one of Oswego's top finishes of the day, placing third with a time of 3:34.61.
Morton also impressed individually, taking second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.68 and adding a sixth-place finish in the long jump (6.05m). Simmons led the Lakers in the 400 meters, finishing ninth overall in 53.92.
In the distance events, freshman Nehemiah Daniel led Oswego in the men's 5,000 meters, placing 11th in 16:03.93. He was followed by T.J. Bowes (17th) and
Aidan Hafer (19th), as the Lakers packed well in a competitive race.
The throwing group also produced solid marks, with Eric Gordon-Wheeler leading the way in both the shot put (11.86m, 8th) and discus (38.19m, 9th), while adding a 13th-place finish in the hammer throw.

th, the Lakers will head to toe Cortland Red Dragon Invite.
