SUNYAC Championship Preview: #13 Oswego at #1 Hobart

Oswego, NY - The SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Championship will be decided Saturday night as the No. 1 nationally ranked Hobart Statesmen host the No. 13 Oswego Lakers at The Cooler in Geneva. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

Season Series
Hobart claimed both regular-season meetings between the teams. The Statesmen earned a 5–2 victory in Oswego on Dec. 5, jumping out to a 2–0 lead in the opening period with an answer from Colin Vassallo to make it 2-1. Tanner Daniels scored twice while Dominic Schimizzi, Tristan Fasig, and Easton Ryan also found the back of the net. Connor Gatton scored the Lakers second goal of the night late in the third.

The teams met again in Geneva on Feb. 6, where Hobart used the first two periods to secure a 6–1 win. Easton Ryan and Kahlil Fontana each scored twice, while Daniels and Schimizzi added goals for the Statesmen. Oswego's lone tally came from Josh Simpson in the second period.

Players to Watch
Hobart's offense has been fueled by a balanced attack throughout the season. Daniels has been a key contributor in the matchup against the Lakers, scoring multiple goals in the first meeting, while Ryan and Fontana both produced multi-goal performances in the February contest.

Oswego will look for offensive production from players like Connor Gatto, Colin Vassallo, and Josh Simpson, each of whom has scored against Hobart this season. Vassallo is coming off a month where he netted 7 goals and added 7 assists.  Be on the lookout for Veterans Matt McQuade and Travis Baker also help set the tone for the Lakers all season.

Championship Atmosphere
Saturday's contest marks the culmination of the SUNYAC season and is expected to bring a playoff atmosphere to Geneva. Oswego has long been one of Hobart's biggest conference rivals, and with both teams nationally ranked, the championship game promises a fast, physical battle.
