OSWEGO, N.Y. — After more than two decades of leadership, mentorship and championship success,
Ed Gosek has announced his retirement as head coach of the SUNY Oswego men's ice hockey program.
Gosek, a proud Oswego alumnus and one of the most accomplished coaches in NCAA Division III men's ice hockey, concludes his tenure having built a nationally respected program defined by competitive excellence, including an NCAA Championship, academic achievement, and a strong sense of tradition.
"Serving as the head coach at Oswego has been the honor of a lifetime," said Gosek. "This program means so much to me, both as a former student-athlete and as a coach. I'm grateful for the players, staff, alumni, and campus community who have supported our teams over the years."
During his time at the helm, Gosek led the Lakers to sustained national prominence, including multiple NCAA tournament appearances and conference championships. His leadership was instrumental in capturing the program's first NCAA Division III National Championship in 2007, a defining moment that elevated Oswego's presence on the national stage. Gosek's teams also reached the NCAA Frozen Four (the hockey equivalent of the Final Four) five years in a row from 2010 to 2014.
Beyond wins and championships, Gosek prioritized the holistic development of student-athletes. His teams consistently excelled in the classroom and were active contributors to the campus and Oswego community. His commitment to fostering leadership, accountability, and character has left a lasting impact on generations of student-athletes.
"Coach Gosek's influence extends far beyond the ice," said Assistant Vice President for Athletics
Wendy McManus. "He has shaped the identity of Laker hockey through his dedication to student-athlete success, his competitive drive, and his deep connection to this institution. His legacy will be felt for years to come."
A member of the Oswego hockey family for decades, Gosek first made his mark as a student-athlete and Oswego Minor Hockey coach before returning to serve as an assistant coach and eventually head coach. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to the program and to the values of SUNY Oswego athletics.
Plans to honor Gosek's career and contributions will be announced at a later date.
Coach Gosek would also like to take time to recognize and thank those whose support and dedication were integral to his tenure.
