Oswego State upset by Geneseo on late goal

After a scoreless first period, Oswego State and Geneseo combined to score 13 goals in the final two periods, highlighted by a flurry at the finish. The Blue Knights netted the final goal with just 20 seconds remaining to send the Laker hockey team to its first loss of the season by the score of 7-6 on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Romney Field House.

Geneseo (5-2-1, 2-2 SUNYAC) twice overcame deficits in the final period before Mike MacDonald (New Glasgow, NS) scored the game winner from the doorstep 20 seconds remaining. It appeared as though MacDonald would send the game to overtime as he scored with 1:28 left to knot the game at six goals apiece.

Oswego State (5-1-2, 3-1 SUNYAC) entered the third trailing 3-2 before Sean Kotary (New Hartford) scored on the power play 4:27 into the final frame. Justin Perron (Dundas, ONT) put the Lakers in front 4-3 less than a minute later with his first goal of the season. The Lakers continued to pressure the Geneseo net as Ryan Woodward (Picton, ONT) scored on a deflection in front to put the hosts in front 5-3.

The Blue Knights countered with a pair of quick power-play goals with Mitch Stephens (Forrest, MAN) scoring at the 12:39 mark and Michel Bond (Hearst, ONT) scoring eight seconds later.

The Lakers regained the lead two minutes later as Jocelyn Dubord (LaChenaie, QUE) banged in a rebound before Geneseo staged its last-minute rally.

After a scoreless opening period, the Blue Knights scored three times in the second, including the final two of the period to head into the third with a 3-2 lead.

Don Patrick (Fulton) had a goal and three assists for the Lakers, while Woodward netted a pair of goals and handed out one helper.

MacDonald also added a pair of assists for the Blue Knights for a five-point game.

Oswego State goalie Ryan Scott (Williamsville) and Geneseo's Brett Walker (Regina, SASK) each finished with 31 saves apiece.

The Lakers return to SUNYAC play on Friday, Nov, 19, traveling to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons in a 7 p.m. start.
