Geneseo defenseman Steve Jordan fired a shot into the upper corner of the net just before the buzzer sounded to end overtime and give the visiting Ice Knights a 3-2 win over Oswego State at Romney Field House on Friday.
The game appeared destined to finish in a tie, but a turnover behind the Oswego State net in the closing seconds allowed Jordan one last shot before the buzzer. He flipped it over the catching glove of Laker goalie Ryan Scott to give Geneseo the win over the No. 3 Lakers.
Geneseo is now 4-2-0 in SUNYAC play and 7-2-1 overall. Oswego State had an eight-game winning streak snapped and stands at 5-1-0 in conference play and 9-3-0 overall.
After a scoreless first period, Geneseo scored off the opening face off in the second period as Mike MacDonald converted an assist from Brett Bestwick just seven seconds into the period. The Lakers responded with two quick goals by Rick Varone and Brendan McLaughlin to take a 2-1 lead.
A power-play goal by Bestwick with 13:52 left in the second period knotted the score, and the game remained tied until Jordan?s buzzer-beating shot.
Oswego State hit the goalpost twice in the third period and had a power-play chance in overtime that yielded three shots but no goals. Derek Jokic made 33 saves and earned the win in goal for the Ice Knights. Oswego State?s Ryan Scott had 23 saves.
The Lakers will host Brockport on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Romney Field House.
