Oneonta holds off Oswego State 9-6

The Oswego State men's lacrosse team fell behind by three goals after the first quarter and never fully recovered as the Lakers fell to visiting Oneonta by the score of 9-5 on Saturday, April 23, at the South Athletic Complex.

Oneonta (7-6, 2-2 SUNYAC) scored the only three goals in the first quarter and then began the second with another to make it a four-goal game before the hosts got on the board midway through the period.

The Lakers (2-10, 0-5 SUNYAC) broke into the scoring column as Mike Strohm (Waterloo) scored on a feed from John Schumacher (Webster) while on the man-advantage.

The Red Dragons countered with a man-up goal of their own as Dan Orlowski (Hauppauge) scored and Sean Sullivan (Syracuse) popped in a goal in the final two minutes of the half giving the visitors a 6-1 cushion at the half.

Oswego State climbed back into the game in the third as Schumacher and Steve Tronovitch (Binghamton) scored back-to-back goals, but Keith Horn (Long Beach) got one back for Oneonta making it a 7-3 game. Tronovitch netted his second goal of the quarter for the hosts in the latter stages of the period making it a three-goal difference heading into the fourth quarter.

The Red Dragons didn't allow the Lakers to get any closer in the final 15 minutes, sending Oswego State to its seventh straight defeat.

Al Simeone (Binghamton) finished with 13 saves for the Lakers, while Oneonta goalie Kyle Reich (New Hyde Park) made 10.

The Lakers will play a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 26, hosting Alfred at 4 p.m.
