The Oswego State women's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit at half to beat Brockport State 3-2 in a brutally physical match. The win for Oswego gives them an overall record 4-3 and 2-1 in SUNYAC games.
The Golden Eagles started off the afternoon with a pair of unassisted goals by junior Lyndsey Burnisky (Phelps, NY/Midlakes). The first goal came as a result of a missed penalty kick taken by teammate Laura Sawyer (Kirkville, NY/Chittenango). Sawyer's PK was punched away in an incredible diving effort by Oswego keeper Ashlee Distin (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley). As a result of the deflection, Burnisky redirected the ball into the back of the net. Burnisky?s second tally came off of a deflected corner kick which she blasted into the upper-left corner of the goal. This proved to be the final point of the day for Brockport as Oswego came out the second half determined to change the pace of the game.
Oswego used the second half as a shooting expo as they nearly doubled their shot output, resulting in three unanswered goals. Junior Maureen Kasperek (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) began the scoring frenzy off a breakaway that was sent in by sophomore Morgan Vrydaghs (Goshen, NY/Campbell Hall).
During the following offensive possession Brockport?s Lyndsey Burnisky was given a yellow-card for back-talking the official. The card resulted in a free kick from about forty yards away. Oswego junior Ashlee Anne-Maltagliati (East Islip, NY/East Islip) decided to take the shortest route possible for the next goal and punted a forty-yard shot right over Brockport goalie Liz Durfee's (Williamson, NY/Williamson) outstretched hands.
Oswego continued to dominate possession and threatened to score several times when on another Laker breakaway Morgan Vrydaghs was pulled to the ground by Brockport's Ashley Ewin (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena). The foul resulted in yet another yellow-card, this time just outside the box. Oswego's Megan Rogers (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) took the penalty kick and sent the ball in directly to sophomore Mary Spuhler (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley). Spuhler received the ball, faked left and passed the ball underneath to Vrydaghs who slammed the ball in the goal for what would be the game-winner.
Oswego will look to take the momentum built in this game to Rochester on Tuesday, where they will face the University of Rochester in a non-conference contest.
