For the second year in a row, the Plattsburgh Cardinals knocked the top-seeded Oswego State hockey team out of the SUNYAC playoffs with a semifinal series win at Romney Field House. The Cardinals won 5-2 on Saturday night to win the series two games to none.
Kevin Galan scored a pair of power-play goals for the Cardinals to put Plattsburgh ahead after Oswego State freshman Derrell Levy opened the scoring in the first period. It was Levy's first goal of the season.
Deryk Whitehead scored halfway through the second period to extend Plattsburgh's lead to 3-1.
The Lakers rallied to pull within one when Matt Whitehead scored with 11:22 remaining in the third period, but the Lakers were whistled for a delay of game bench minor when a fan threw a bagel onto the ice after the Whitehead goal.
Plattsburgh capitalized on the ensuing power play when Mike Baccaro scored to re-establish a two-goal advantage. Ben Kemp added an empty-net goal.
Craig Neilson made 22 saves for the Cardinals and Ryan Scott stopped 20 shots for the Lakers.
The Cardinals move on to the SUNYAC finals next weekend with a 18-10-1 record. Oswego State fell to 18-7-2 with the loss.
