Lakers win in triple overtime

The Oswego State men's lacrosse team defeated Potsdam 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon in three overtimes. Oswego State's Steve Tronovitch scored the game-winning goal 26 seconds into the third overtime session.

Neither team held more than a two-goal lead at any point in the game. The teams alternated scoring the first six goals of the game but Potsdam's Adam Wood and Matt Vaverchak tallied to put the Bears in front 5-3. Oswego State scored five of the next six goals to turn that deficit into a two-goal advantage. Two goals by Potsdam over the last five minutes of play sent the game into overtime.

A pushing penalty against Potsdam late in the second overtime gave the Lakers possession of the ball without a face off in the third overtime and Tronovitch buried the game-winner two seconds after the penalty was released.

Tronovitch had three goals in the game to lead all Laker scorers. Chris Mitchell and Rob Tramantozzi each scored twice. Mike Strohm had three assists. Laker goalie Matt Pfister made 13 saves on the afternoon including a stop in overtime on a close-range shot by Harrison Rogers.

Potsdam's Travis Holmes had two goals and three assists and Harrison Rogers scored twice and had two assists. Goalie Brian Hondorf made nine saves.

The Lakers improved to 2-2 in the SUNYAC and 4-8 overall while Potsdam is now 2-3 in the conference and 5-7 overall. Oswego State travels to Oneonta for a game on Saturday at noon.
