The Cortland women's soccer team maintained second place in the SUNYAC with a 2-0 win over visiting Oswego Wednesday afternoon at Holloway Field in Cortland. The Red Dragons won their sixth straight game to improve to 9-5-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the conference. The Lakers fell to 5-9-1 and 4-5-1 with the setback.
Senior Andrea Marino and freshman Kelsey Allen each scored a goal for Cortland, and freshman Carly Williams and junior Katie Trivisonno collected assists. Freshman goalie Dayna Moneta made three saves in posting her third shutout of the season.
For the Lakers, freshman goalie Toby Klein made 10 saves.
Marino gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute with her fifth goal of the season. She took a long pass from Williams on the right side of the box, cut inside a defender and sent a left-footed shot from the elbow of the six-yard line into the upper left corner.
Oswego's best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the 74th minute. Senior Ashley Pople served a long free kick into the box from the left side. The ball bounced in front where sophomore Julie McCloskey one-touched a shot that sailed over the crossbar. Three minutes later, Allen scored an insurance goal, the first of her career. Trivisonno sent a cross from the right side that went across the goal mouth and to Allen who one-timed a shot into the open right side of the goal. An Oswego defender slid to stop the shot, but the ball had already crossed the goal line.
McCloskey had a second chance in the 81st minute, but her shot from the right side just went over the right elbow of the goal.
The Lakers will host New Paltz on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Laker Field.
