Red Dragons pull out close win over Lakers on Saturday

The Oneonta Red Dragons edged Oswego State 10-9 in a men's lacrosse game at Laker Field in Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The game was tied after the first, second, and third quarters.

The Lakers scored twice in the last minute of the third quarter to knot the game at 7-7, and then scored an extra-man goal early in the fourth quarter to take the lead.

Oneonta then scored three straight goals, including Scott Weiner's fourth of the game with 3:30 remaining on an unsettled situation to take a 10-8 lead. That final goal proved to be the game-winner as Oswego State scored with 21 seconds left on a goal by Dan Rogers, but couldn't control the ensuing face off and time expired.

Weiner also had three assists in the game, and Gordon Bopp had three goals for Oneonta.

Oswego State's offense was paced by Mike Recor, who had four goals in the game. Rogers scored twice and John Schumacher, Mike Strohm, and Mike Brewster also scored.

The Lakers converted three of seven extra-man opportunities on the day and outshot Oneonta 36-32. Oneonta goalie Kyle Reich entered the game after Oswego State had taken the lead and made three big saves, allowing just one goal, to earn the win. Matt Pfister was the goalie of record for Oswego State and made 12 saves.

The Lakers are now 3-8 on the year and 0-4 in the SUNYAC, while Oneonta is 10-4 and 1-3 in the conference.

Oswego State plays road games at Potsdam and Keuka this week, then hosts Geneseo on April 29 at 1 p.m.
