Lakers sweep Oneonta; Paino gets 400th career win

The Oswego State baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Oneonta by the scores of 3-1 and 3-2. With the victory in the first game, Frank Paino won his 400th career game as head coach of the Lakers.

Oswego State improved to 12-7 overall and solidified their standing in the SUNYAC with a 7-5 conference record. Oneonta fell to 18-9 overall and 4-6 in SUNYAC games.

Oswego State 3, Oneonta 1

Justin White was the winning pitcher in the first game, allowing just one unearned run in the game. That came in the top of the third inning.

The Lakers rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning when Justin Horbal walked and Mike Levy reached on an error. Brett Shaffer had an RBI single to left to tie the game, and then Tom Farrell doubled to center field to bring in two more runs.

That was all of the scoring in the game, as Oswego State's White pitched the complete game. He allowed eight hits and two walks, but the Laker defense helped him with two double plays in the game. White had four strikeouts.

Mike Myrdycz was the losing pitcher, and Don Lawrence pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Red Dragons.

Oswego State 3, Oneonta 2

Farrell also came through in the second game, with the game-winning single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Mike Levy with the winning run. Justin Horbal was the winning pitcher.

The Lakers turned three double plays in the first four innings to keep the game scoreless. Oneonta went ahead with a run in the top of the fifth on a double by Josh Bedosky, but the Lakers tied it in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Brett Shaffer.

It was the same story in the sixth, as Oneonta scored in the top half on a two-out single by Mickey Collins and the Lakers tied it when Nick Marzullo led off with a double in the bottom half and came in to score on a ground out.

Horbal retired the Dragons with three ground balls in the seventh to wrap up his complete-game victory, and the Lakers did the damage in the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single by Mike Levy, and a single to right field by Shaffer to put runners on first and third. With the infield drawn in, Farrell singled up the middle to plate the winning run.

The Lakers host Cazenovia on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a non-league game.
