The nationally-ranked Cortland Red Dragons defeated the Oswego State field hockey team 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Cortland.
With the win, Cortland (6-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) claimed the Dragon Sword for the eighth straight year. The winner's prize is an actual three-foot long Samurai-style sword with a red and white metallic sheath, a dragon's head handle and a dragon's wing and talon making up the hand guard. It was donated in 2000 by Oswego graduates Michael and Kimberlee (Bennett) Champitto as a trophy for the annual Cortland-Oswego field hockey winner.
Cortland sophomores Lauren Eichenberger and Christine McCabe paced the Red Dragon offense with two goals each as they scored Cortland's first four goals of the game. Erika Salls and Brenda Semit added a goal and an assist, while senior Kristin Courtney, Samantha Spehler and Courtney Stevens each tallied a goal.
For Oswego State, goalie Sarah Hafter turned aside 23 shots and successfully cleared away numerous other balls. The Lakers' best chance to score came midway through the second half when Cortland goalie Stacy Billings had to make back-to-back saves on freshman Lori Teaney and sophomore Eileen O'Neill.
Cortland outshot Oswego, 44-4, in the game and held an 18-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Lakers are now 1-6 overall and 1-1 in SUNYAC play. Oswego State travels to Oneonta for another SUNYAC contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
