Dave Baldanza (Herkimer) tallied scores, while a staunch defense held firm for the second straight weekend as the Oswego State men's soccer team won its third straight game in SUNYAC play with a 2-0 shutout of defending conference champion SUNY Fredonia on Friday, Oct. 10 on Laker Field. The victory kept the Lakers (6-5-0, 4-1-0 SUNYAC) in a tie for second place in the conference standings with Oneonta State and The College at Brockport.
Oswego has won four of its last five games in the last 16 days, yielding only three goals while putting 11 into the net.
The Lakers scored first in the 37th minute of play as Cavalcanti scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year, taking a chip pass from Ryan Aman from the right side of the field into the penalty area and putting a shot past Fredonia goalkeeper Tom Cavanaugh. The Blue Devils (7-5-0, 1-3-0 SUNYAC) had its best opportunity to score midway into the first half, but Laker goalie Matt Wopperer (Manlius/Fayetteville) made his lone save of the day from point blank range to prevent the attempt.
The games second goal came at 51:50 in the second half as the Oswego defense cleared a Fredonia offensive drive. Baldanza met the pass and beat the lone Blue Devil defender in a 40-yard sprint towards the goal, putting a shot to the right of the goalie for the easy score.
The Laker defense took over for the remainder of the half, frustrating the Fredonia offense in holding them to only four shots for the half and eight shots for the game. The frustration took its toll at the 77:50 mark in the half when a pair of Fredonia players were issued red cards for gross misconduct. Two Oswego players were booked with yellow cards in the stretch as well.
Wopperer earned his second shutout of the season with the win, improving to 4-1 in his last five starts in goal. The Lakers will go for its fourth straight conference on Saturday afternoon when it takes on Buffalo State College in a 3 p.m. meeting on Laker Field.
