Sophomore forward
Felipe Cavalcanti (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) scored a pair of goals in the first half while the defense held off a last minute charge in the second half as the Oswego State men's soccer team moved to the .500 mark on the season with a 2-1 victory over regionally ranked Plattsburgh State on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Laker Field.
The Lakers (5-5-0 overall, 3-1-0 SUNYAC), who posted their first win over the Cardinals since the 2002 season, moved into a four-way tie for second place in the conference standings. Plattsburgh (9-3-1, 2-2-1 SUNYAC) came into the game ranked fourth in the Northeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Oswego got on the scoreboard first when Cavalcanti took a pass from sophomore German Colazzo (Freeport) from left post into the penalty area, putting a shot past Plattsburgh goalkeeper John San Filippo at the 23:10 mark. Cavalcanti scored his second goal of the game at 36:17 of the period, taking a long pass from the right side of the field from junior Chris Carra (Endwell/Maine-Endwell), intercepting the ball from ten feet out in the middle of the box and beating a defender before scoring.
Cavalcanti, who scored the game winner the day before in a 4-0 win over Potsdam, takes over the team lead in goals with five, totaling 10 points.
Plattsburgh, who held an 11-7 edge in shots, pulled to within a goal when the Lakers accidentally put the ball into their own net in an attempt to clear the ball in a mad scramble in front of the goal on a corner kick attempt. The Cardinals had several good chances to even the score late in the game, but the Oswego defense succeeded in not letting a shot get near sophomore starting goalkeeper Matt Wopperer (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), who made two saves in picking up his second straight win in the net, and third in his first four starts.
Both teams amassed a combined 25 fouls (Oswego 15, Plattsburgh 10), with the Lakers getting booked for five yellow cards (four in the second half) to just one for Plattsburgh.
Oswego plays host to another SUNYAC weekend on Oct. 10 and 11, hosting defending SUNYAC champion Fredonia State at 4 p.m. on Friday before taking on Buffalo State the next day at 3 p.m.
