Oswego State drops season-opener in double overtime

With heavy rain falling the entire evening, the Oswego State men's lacrosse team lost 11-10 at SUNY Maritime in the season-opening game for the Lakers.

Mike Recor and Mike Strohm each had four goals for Oswego State to account for most of the Laker offense. Mike Brewster and Dan Scarazzo chipped in with one goal each. Brewster and Dan Rogers had two assists apiece. Judd Robinson made 18 saves in goal for Oswego State.

The first quarter saw both teams combine for 10 goals, as Oswego State built a 6-4 lead after the opening 15 minutes. A costly penalty on Maritime in the opening minutes put the Privateers a man down for three minutes, and the Lakers scored three goals during that extended man-up situation to build a 3-1 lead.

Following the first quarter, each team's defense took over the game. The Lakers managed to score one goal on seven shots, while allowing two goals on 10 shots. Oswego State went into the half with a 7-6 advantage.

With slippery conditions on the field, both offenses struggled to get things going in the third quarter. The teams scored two-goals each and Oswego State held a 9-8 lead after three.  The Lakers opened the fourth quarter with a goal to extend the lead to 10-8, but once again the Privateers answered right back. Down one with 2:06 to play, the Privateers drew a penalty on the Lakers, to give them a man-up opportunity. Maritime capitalized on the advantage, and sent the game into overtime, scoring with 1:27 left in the fourth.

With the field conditions getting worse from the rain, the players struggled to keep their feet and play was sloppy. The Privateers took possession of the ball with just over a minute to play, ran the length of the field, and set their offense up. With one second to go in the second overtime, senior captain Donald Toby took a pass form Stephen Doherty and sent it past the keeper and into the back of the net, for Maritime's second victory of the season.

Oswego State returns to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at SUNY Farmingdale.
