The Laker baseball team defeated Clarkson 5-3 in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, but dropped the second game by the score of 6-2. Each game was seven innings long.
Oswego State is now 10-6 on the season, while Clarkson is 10-11. The Lakers will take the road this weekend for a pair of SUNY Athletic Conference doubleheaders at New Paltz on Saturday and Oneonta on Sunday.
Oswego State 5, Clarkson 3
The Lakers turned things in their favor with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mike Levy started the rally with a solo home run that tied the game 3-3. Wes O'Connor walked and Josh Stoetzel followed with a single. Two more walks forced in a run, and a sac fly by Tom Benedetto brought in Stoetzel with an insurance run.
Dan Pecora earned the victory on the mound with four innings of work in relief of starter Jim Rinella. He allowed just four hits, including a leadoff double in the top of the seventh, but worked out of a jam to close out the Laker victory.
Mike Bresett was 3-for-3 for the Golden Knights and Alex Giovannone took the loss on the mound in relief.
Clarkson 6, Oswego State 2
The Golden Knights scored four runs in the second inning to take advantage of the second game and went on to the victory. They chased Laker starter Alex Jarvela after two innings, and Marc Peterson pitched the last five innings in relief with five strikeouts and no walks.
Oswego State's runs came in the second and fourth innings. Six different players had hits for the Lakers, and all of them were singles.
