The Oswego State field hockey team had an opportunity to do what no other Laker squad has done in five years in SUNYAC play at Morrisville State. With a chance to pick up its second conference victory and stay atop the standings. Both teams were deadlocked at 1-1 through regulation and two sudden-death overtime periods before Morrisville scored the only goal in a penalty-stroke shootout to pull out a 2-1 victory.
Oswego (1-6 overall, 1-1 SUNYAC) has won only two conference games total, posting victories in 2003 and 2007, while going winless from 2004-06.
The host jumped on the scoreboard 1:40 into the contest on a goal from Jennifer May. The lead would stand until the 48:50 mark in the second half, when Oswego freshman Jordan McGuire (Macedon/Penfield) scored her first collegiate goal off of a forward pass from junior Eileen O'Neill (New City/Clarkstown South). Oswego put two additional shots into the net during the game, but both chances were waived off.
The score remained even through regulation and overtime, forcing a penalty stroke shootout. Morrisville's Chelsea Thomas was the lone player to score in the shootout, putting a shot past Oswego sophomore goalie Jamie Scharfe (Webster/Webster Thomas) in the first set of strokes.
For the first time this season, the Lakers led the contest in shots, holding an overwhelming 20-8 advantage over the Mustangs (13-3 in the first half). Morrisville held a 23-21 edge in penalty corners. Scharfe finished with seven saves in 90 minutes of action.
Oswego returns to Laker Field this week for a pair of SUNYAC games, facing eight-time conference champion and nationally ranked SUNY Cortland in the annual "Dragon's Sword" game on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m., then host Oneonta State in a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, Sept. 27.
