Junior forward
Tricia Sullivan (Copenhagen) scored three goals in a 5:27 stretch in the first half to help the Oswego State women's soccer team snap a three-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over SUNY Institute of Technology (SUNYIT) in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Laker Field.
Sullivan's hat trick was part of a five-goal onslaught for the Lakers (3-3), who outshot the Wildcats, 22-1, in the opening half, and finished with a 34-6 advantage for the game. SUNYIT (3-4), formerly a member of the SUNYAC conference, is in its first season as a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).
Oswego opened the scoring at the 10:49 mark on an unassisted goal from sophomore Liz Miller (Oswego) before Sullivan began her scoring run. Her first goal came at 22:16 on a pass from classmate Julie McCloskey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay), followed by her second more than two and a half minutes later (24:59), assisted by freshman Alexa Krebs (Massapequa). Freshman Laura Ambron (Fishkill/John Jay), who scored the final Oswego goal in the half (35:24), assisted on Sullivan's third goal of the game (fourth of the season) at 28:03.
The Lakers tallied their final goal late in the second half when McCloskey took a pass from rookie Kheetah Koutouan (Cornwall) inside the penalty area and put it through the net past SUNYIT goalie Laurel Hosmer at 77:27.
Oswego sophomore goalie Toby Klein was rarely tested throughout the day in picking up the win. Her bid for the shutout was ruined when SUNYIT forward Jane Burroughs took a desperation shot from 38 yards out with time running out, floating over the head and outstretched hands of Klein into the goal with one second left on the clock.
The Lakers will play its second game in as many days on Wednesday, Sept. 24, taking on Morrisville State in a 4 p.m. SUNYAC matchup at Laker Field.
