Freshman forward
Kelly Collins (Fairport) registered her second multi-goal performance of the season, tallying a pair of goals in the game's opening minutes, while the defense held off a late charge by the opponent in the final four minutes as the Oswego State field hockey team picked up its second win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Oneonta State in a SUNYAC contest on Laker Field.
The win by the Lakers (2-7 overall, 2-2 SUNYAC) was the first over the Red Dragons (4-4 overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) since a 1-0 triumph during the 2001 season. The two conference wins on the year are the most by an Oswego team since posting a 3-2 record and a third-place finish in 2002. The team managed only one SUNYAC victory during the 2003 and 2007 seasons, while going winless from 2004-2006.
Oswego controlled the tempo for the entire first half, taking the opening possession and scoring only 57 seconds into the game as Collins scored from inside the circle on a pass from sophomore midfielder Sara Budde (Appleton/Barker) from left post.
Collins, whose three goals, two assists outbutst three weeks earlier led to the Lakers' first win at New Paltz, scored her second goal of the game unassisted at the 13:00 mark, scoring off of a rebound after Oneonta goalie Erika Dombkowski made a save of her initial shot attempt. Collins registered eight shots on goal, all coming in the first half, as Oswego held a 12-9 shots advantage going into halftime.
The Laker defense came into play for the second half, holding the Oneonta offense and SUNYAC leading scorer Ainsley Stoll (seven goals and 15 points coming into the contest) at bay for most of the period. The Red Dragons took five shots in the half, but turned up the heat in the final four minutes of the game, when they had four penalty corner opportunies, with each one thwarted by the Oswego defense.
Oneonta turned it into a one-goal game with 2:15 to play in regulation when Somer Sheffield took a pass from Kate Kubarek and beat Laker goalie Jamie Scharfe (Webster/Webster Thomas) from close range.
Scharfe finished with three saves in earning her second career victory in the cage, the first since taking over regular goalkeeping duties in the eighth game of the 2007 season - which coincidentally over a year to the day against Oneonta. Dombkowski stopped seven shots for The Red Dragons, all coming in the first half.
Oswego takes to the road for its next two games, taking on Elmira College for a 4 p.m. contest on Wednesday, Oct. 1 before facing SUNYAC leading Geneseo on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. The Lakers return home on Thursday, Oct. 9 for a 4 p.m. meeting with Brockport in their SUNYAC finale.
