Laker women open 2008 season with 2-1 win over Rutgers-Camden in opening round of Cortland Tournament

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Tricia Sullivan (Copenhagen) scored in the 72nd minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Oswego women's soccer team to a 2-1 win versus Rutgers University-Camden Saturday afternoon in the Cortland Red Dragon Classic. The Lakers improved to 1-0 with the win, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 2-1 with the setback.

Rutgers-Camden opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Junior Kate Campbell (Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) was able to touch a loose ball past Oswego sophomore goalie Toby Klein (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) after an initial save to make it a 1-0 game. Just three minutes earlier, Klein denied sophomore Vanessa Maia's (Union, NJ) long free kick with a punch save that caromed the ball off the crossbar. In the 36th minute, the Lakers knotted the contest on a goal that barely made it over the goal line. Junior Brooke Sherman (Oswego) served a ball into the box, and sophomore Rachel Maul (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) directed a header toward the goal. Rutgers-Camden junior goalie Natalie Browne (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) made the original save but fell back into the goal as the ball bounced off her hands, clearing the goal line.

The teams traded chances in the closing minutes of the half with Browne making a diving save on Sullivan in the 41st minute and Rutgers-Camden junior Jessica Leoni (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) just sliding a shot wide left right before the buzzer.

Moments before Sullivan's game-winner, each team had an excellent chance to score. In the 70th minute, an Oswego defender cleared senior Jayme Gatti's (Delran, NJ) shot off the goal line, then Browne made a diving save on a low shot from Oswego freshman Lindsey Forte (Marietta/Marcellus) in the 71st minute. Less than a minute later, Laker freshman Alyssa Dean (Auburn/Union Springs) fed a pass to Sullivan on the right side. Sullivan took a low shot that bounced off the inside of the left post and rolled inside the goal line for the game-winning score. The Scarlet Raptors pressed late but the Lakers held on for the win.

Both Klein and Browne finished the game with four saves. Oswego concludes tournament play tomorrow morning with an 11:00 a.m. contest with Alvernia College.
