The Oswego State field hockey needed a season-high five goals to defeat Elmira College 5-3 on a chilly Wednesday afternoon in Oswego. Brittany Roezter (Jr., Akron, N.Y.) paced the offensive attack for the Lakers with two goals and an assist, as Oswego State improved to 5-6-0 overall. The Soaring Eagles fell to 0-11-0 on the season.

Head coach Brandi Ostrander's squad scored two minutes into the contest when Amy Carey (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) recorded her first goal of the season when she got behind Elmira goalkeeper Jalene McCulloch, who came out of the net to play the pass from Katie Mazuchowski (So., Tonawanda, N.Y.).

A similar play produced the Lakers' second goal when Jordan McGuire (So., Macedon, N.Y.) hung on to the ball long enough to draw out the defense before finding Brittany Roezter for the score at the 9:16 mark.  Minutes later, the Soaring Eagles cut the deficit in half as Jessica Kischko scored directly off of a penalty corner from Sarah Torilli.  Four seconds before the end of the frame, Oswego State regained its two-goal advantage at 3-1 when Mazuchowski received a feed from Alyssa Hare (Fr., Middleport, N.Y.) for the goal.

Roezter extended the Laker lead to three in the early stages of the second half with her fifth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Mazuchowski.  Elmira was not done though as the Soaring Eagles responded with goals from Kischko off of another penalty corner and Veronica Fernandez with under twenty minutes to play to make the score 4-3.  Elmira increased pressure in the offensive zone, but Oswego State stood up to the challenge holding its opponent after a series of penalty corners.

The Lakers added an insurance goal in the 65th minute when Roetzer and Hare had a 2-0 breakaway against McCulloch.  Roezter managed to get a pass through McCulloch to Hare, who tapped the ball into the open net to give Oswego State a 5-3 lead.

Both squads were even at 15 penalty corners, but the Lakers owned a 22-14 advantage in shots.  Oswego State goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) came up with six saves, while the defense combined to make three stops.  Elmira's McCulloch finished the game with 15 saves.

Oswego State will host Oneonta on Friday at 4:30 p.m. as the teams are separated by one game in the league standings as the Red Dragons are 3-1 and the Lakers are 2-2.
