Brockport's Steve Abgarian tallied the game-winning goal 2:33 into the second overtime period as the Oswego State men's soccer team fell to the Golden Eagles 2-1 on a chilly Friday afternoon in Oswego. The Lakers dropped to 4-8-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the SUNY Athletic Conference standings, while Brockport improved to 6-4-2 overall and 4-2-0 in the league.
The first half was a seesaw battle with each team trying to create offensive opportunities. Oswego State had the first chance in the 11th minute when Felipe Cavalcanti (Sr., Valatie, N.Y.) found Tony Greene (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) on the right side of the field. Greene ripped a shot that narrowly missed the left post before going wide.
However, it was Brockport that opened the scoring late in the first half. Jeff Palumbo served a ball into the box on a corner kick to a mass of players leaping to make a play on the ball. Jamey Crumb managed to head the ball into the back of the goal past Laker goalkeeper Matt Wopperer (Jr., Manilus, N.Y.) for the 1-0 lead with 1:17 remaining in the period.
Oswego State fought to get back into the contest in the second half, and began to control play in the latter stages of the game. The increased pressure forced the Golden Eagles to commit a foul in their defensive zone. On the ensuing free kick from the right side, senior Chris Carra (Endwell, N.Y.) bent the ball to the left side where classmate Greg Blette (Lakeview, N.Y.) headed the ball past Brockport goalie Joe Marino in the 83rd minute. Neither squad was able to notch the decisive goal before the end of regulation, forcing the game into overtime.
The two best scoring opportunities came early in the first overtime when the Lakers had two corner kicks, but they were unable to convert the chances as the game went into the second extra period.
In the second overtime, the Golden Eagles created a two-man rush against the Oswego State defense. Brad Lefort pushed the ball up the right side before passing to Steve Abgarian, who just got past the Laker defender to get a foot on the ball. Just as Abgarian was about to gain control of the pass, Wopperer came out of the net to break up the play. Abgarian hung on to the ball long enough to be able to shoot the ball into the open net.
Both squads took 13 shots, while Oswego State held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Wopperer finished the contest with four saves, while Marino made four stops for Brockport.
The Lakers face Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Oswego.
