New Paltz's Stacey Miller broke open a tie game with 56 seconds remaining as the Hawks handed the Oswego State field hockey team a 2-1 loss in Oswego on Saturday. The loss dropped the Lakers to 5-8-0 overall and 2-4 in the SUNY Athletic Conference standings, while New Paltz moved to 6-9-0 overall and 2-4 in the league after the final conference game of the season.
The first scoring opportunity came in the sixth minute for the Hawks when Hannah Peters was awarded a penalty stroke. Oswego State goalie Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) steered away the shot with her blocker, as she was moving towards the left post.
Near the midway point of the period, Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) corralled a ball sent deep into the Laker offensive zone. Collins fed Katie Mazuchowski (So., Tonawanda, N.Y.), who found Jordan McGuire (So., Macedon, N.Y.) in the middle of the field. McGuire faked a shot and found Alyssa Hare (Fr., Middleport, N.Y.) on the left post as she tapped the ball past New Paltz goalkeeper Elizabeth Tong to give Oswego State a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks tied up the score when Sarah Schloss pushed the ball up the right side before hitting Kristen Bergmann with a pass. Bergmann moved in on net as she found Stacey Miller, who put the ball inside the left post.
Schloss nearly ended the deadlock with 6:34 remaining in the contest, but Scharfe made a diving stick save to her right side to preserve the 1-1 score. The increased New Paltz pressured eventually paid off as Miller scored her second goal of the game after Bergmann hit her with the pass near the left post in the 69th minute.
The Hawks dominated the statistical categories as they outshot the Lakers 18-5, and took 15 penalty corners compared to five for Oswego State. Scharfe finished the game with seven saves, while her counterpart Tong recorded two.
The Lakers will travel to Wells on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game.
