Lakers defeat Geneseo, 5-1, in SUNYAC semifinals, advance to second-straight championship game

OSWEGO – Freshman forward Eric Selleck (Shanley, ONT) had two goals and an assist and sophomore forward Chris Laganiere (Owego, NY) had three assists, leading Oswego State past Geneseo by a score of 5-1 in the SUNYAC Semifinals at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Oswego State senior defenseman Rich Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) opened the scoring at 2:13 of the first period on a shot that beat Geneseo goaltender Cory Gershon low. The Lakers (18-7-1) tallied twice more before the end of the period on goals by senior forward Ryan Ellis (Georgetown, ONT) and senior forward Mark Lozzi (Richmond Hill, ONT).

After Oswego State dominated the first period, outshooting the Ice Knights 22-7, Geneseo (14-12-1) came out with a stronger effort in the second. They tested Oswego State goaltender Tim Potter (Bakersfield, CA) 16 times, beating him once 16 seconds after the first penalty of an Ice Knights 5-on-3 advantage expired on a goal by Casey Balog.

Following Balog's goal, neither team scored for the rest of the period and Oswego State entered the third with a 3-1 lead. This lead proved to be more than enough, as the rest of the scoring came from Selleck, who notched goals at 4:33 and 6:17 of the period to ice the game for the Lakers.

Gershon had 42 saves in the losing effort, and Potter stopped 27 of 28 shots.

The Lakers' next game will be against the top-ranked Plattsburgh Cardinals in the SUNYAC Championship game on Saturday, March 7 at Stafford Ice Arena. This will be the second consecutive year that the Lakers and the Cardinals will meet in the finals. The winner will gain an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
