Oswego State nearly overcame a six-goal deficit with a 6-2 run late in the second half, but visiting and undefeated Fredonia State went on a late defensive stand in the final 4:25 of the game to hold on to a 13-16 victory over the Lakers in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams on Thursday, April 2 at Laker Field.
Fredonia (6-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) held a 10-6 first half lead on the strength of freshman attack Amy Simon, who scored five of her game-high six goals in the half, and junior Katie Monaghan with a pair of scores. The Blue Devils scored the opening two goals of the second half in opening their largest lead of the game at 12-6 with 19:57 to play, and maintained the margin after both teams exchanged goals within a 1:50 span.
Oswego (4-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) began its push with 16:36 to play when Freshman Rachel Raffa (Kings Park) scored the second of her two goals off of an assist from classmate Kristen Darcy (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa). After a Fredonia score, the Lakers answered with four straight goals, which began with a score from senior Colleen Ventura (LaFayette), back-to-back goals from senior Rachel Ventresca (Syracuse/Heninger) and a goal from Darcy with 7:07 to play to pull the team to within 14-12.
Fredonia scored again 1:54 later, but Darcy registered her fourth goal of the game off of a Ventresca pass to pull Oswego to within two goals for the second time, but Fredonia kept the ball away from the Lakers for most of the remaining 4:25, scoring an insurance goal with 51 seconds to play to secure the win.
Raffa posted her second seven-point game of the week, also dishing out three assists on the day, while Raffa, Ventresca, and sophomore Bri Borrow (Oswego) tallied two goals and an assist each. Sophomore Kelly Schroeder (Warwick/Warwick Vallry) and junior Erin Robson (Orillia, ONT/Orillia District) also registered goals as Oswego outshot Fredonia, 39-32 and held a 46-27 advantage on ground balls.
Freshman Nicole Nalle (Oswego) played the opening 46:21 in goal, making eight saves and giving up 14 goals, before giving way to senior Shannon O'Brien (Syracuse/West Genesee) for the final 13:39, making one save while yielding a pair of goals.
The Lakers will travel to SUNY Cortland on Saturday, April 4 to take on the 17th-ranked Red Dragons in a 4 p.m. conference matchup.
