Senior
Rachel Ventresca (Syracuse/Henninger) scored a team-high four goals, while classmate
Shannon Brown (Amherst) added three goals for Oswego State. But the Lakers saw their slim hopes for a SUNYAC playoff berth come to an end as Oneonta State broke open a one-goal halftime with a 10-6 second half en route to an 18-13 win in SUNYAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday, April 25 on Laker Field.
Brown and Ventresca were two of seven seniors playing in their final home game for Oswego (9-7, 2-5 SUNYAC), joining co-captains
Jackie Dougherty (Lindenhurst) and
Colleen Ventura (Lafayette), goalkeeper
Shannon O'Brien (Syracuse/West Genesee),
Erin Robson (Orillia, ONT/Orillia District), and
Caitlin Weir (Pearl River/Nanuet).
Ventresca currently stands fourth all-time at Oswego with 182 points (128 goals, 54 assists), five points from tying for third place with one game remaining on the regular season schedule. On the season, she has 88 points (56 goals, 32 assists), only two points shy of the single-season scoring mark set by Kat Stead during the 2001 season.
Sophomore Bri Borrow (Oswego) scored twice, while Robson, juniors Jessica Zenzel (Johnson City) and Andrea Musso (Auburn), and freshman Rachael Raffa (Kings Park) each tallied single scores.
O'Brien made 19 saves in playing the full 60 minutes, becoming the all-time career leader in the program's history with 381 saves.
Both teams played even for most of the first half. Oneonta (8-5, 5-2 SUNYAC) opened with a 4-1 lead before the Lakers answered with three straight goals in a 4:41 stretch to tie the score with 4-4 with 14:19 to play.
Oswego would never take the lead throughout the period, but tied the score two more times (6-6 on a free-position goal from Ventresca with 7:25 remaining, and 7-7 on a free-position score from Brown with 1:46 to play) before Oneonta scored the eventual go-ahead goal with six seconds to play on the half
The Red Dragons increased the lead to 12-7 with four straight goals in the opening 5:46 of the second half before goals from Brown and Ventresca would pull Oswego to within three at the 8:26 mark. Oneonta went on a 4-1 scoring run in building its largest lead of the game at 16-10 with 5:35 to play.
Oneonta freshman Rachel Monteith led all scorers with six goals, followed by sophomore Rosemarie Fazio and junior Lauren Portnoy with three goals each. Freshman goalie Anneliese Muscietta stopped 15 shots.
The Lakers wrap up their regular-season schedule on Tuesday, April 28 with a 4:00 pm SUNYAC matchup at the College at Brockport.
