Lakers post 20-win season with doubleheader sweep of Utica College

Oswego State secured its first 20-win season in nine years in registering a doubleheader sweep over Utica College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, May 6 in Oswego. The Lakers (20-13), who's last 20-win campaign came during the 2001 season when they finished 20-12 and garnered a runner-up finish in the SUNYAC Championship tournament,  won the opening game 25-4 before taking the nightcap, 4-2.

Oswego registered all of its runs off of 22 hits and six Utica errors in the opener, scoring ten times on six hits and four errors in the opening inning.  Junior designated player Zack Eason (Oswego) batted 4-for-4 (three triples, home run) with nine runs batted in, while senior first baseman Josh Stoetzel (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) went 3-for-4 (two doubles) with four runs scored and four RBI as 12 different Lakers registered at least a hit and a run.

Senior P.J. Cowie (Rochester/Spencerport) tossed a three hitter for six innings in picking up the win, striking out two while walking four and giving up a pair of runs, which came on a home run from Utica catcher Jonathan Meyer.

Game two was a more competitive affair as both teams went scoreless through two innings before the Lakers scored in the bottom of the third when senior second baseman Zack Owen (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) reached base on a bunt single, advanced to second on a failed pick off attempted, and reached third on a sacrifice fly before scoring on a wild pitch.

Oswego added another run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Wes O'Connor, scoring Mike Levy from third, before adding a pair of runs in the fifth inning as Stpetzel drove in Pat O'Keefe from second on an RBI single to left field, then scored on a passed ball after a stolen base and a fly out moved him to third.

Oswego tallied only six hits in the contest, with no player registering multiple hits. Freshman pitcher Brady Farkas (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tossed five innings, giving up only three hits, a run, and two walks while striking out five in improving to 4-0 on the season, while senior Dan Pecora (Oswego) pitched the final two innings, yielding only a hit and a run, while striking out five.

The Lakers close out the 2009 season on Saturday, May 9 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Rochester Institute of Technology.
