Brittany Roetzer (Jr., Akron, N.Y.) gave the Oswego State field hockey team a 1-0 lead in the first half, but was unable to hold down sixth-ranked Cortland in a 4-1 loss on Saturday in Oswego.

The Red Dragons dominated possession time in the first half, heavily testing the Laker defense.  However, Oswego goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) turned in a stellar performance in goal steering away initial shots, while the defense cleared and blocked the rebound opportunities.

It was not until the midway point of the frame that the Lakers had their first scoring chance.  Laker Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) broke free carrying the ball up the center of the field.  Her initial shot was blocked by a defender, but Oswego maintained control long enough for Jordan McGuire (So., Macedon, N.Y.) to get a shot through the defense to goalkeeper Ashley Hughes.  Brittany Roetzer was positioned for the rebound though as her shot went just inside the right post and across the goal line in the 18th minute to give the Lakers a one-goal lead. Cortland responded before the end of the half as it was able to get a pair of shots past Scharfe.  Brenda Semit tied the score at 1-1 after she was awarded a penalty shot at the 26:04 mark.  As halftime loomed, the Red Dragons took the lead when Lauren Eichenberger scored her fourth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Semit.

Cortland showed why it is the sixth-ranked team in Division III as it added another Eichenberger goal and a goal from Danielle Groneman en route to the 4-1 victory.  The Red Dragons outshot Oswego State 33-7 and held a 19-8 advantage in penalty corners, including a 14-1 edge in the first half.  Scharfe made 17 saves for the Lakers, while her teammates combined to make five saves.  Hughes made two saves and allowed one goal for Cortland, which improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Oswego State, which falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC, will face Brockport on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Oswego.
