Senior Brittany Roezter got her stick on a loose ball rolling through the crease 2:45 into overtime to give the Oswego State field hockey team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Brockport on Friday in Oswego. The Lakers sent the game into the extra frame after
Alyssa Hare tied the game at one with just under four minutes remaining. It was the first conference win of the season for Oswego State, which improved to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Golden Eagles fell to 5-6 on the season and 2-2 in the SUNYAC.
Brockport controlled the first 35 minutes of play with an 11-4 advantage in corners and 9-2 edge in shots. The Laker defense was up for the challenge as goalkeeper
Jamie Scharfe made several sprawling saves and midfielder
Sara Budde registered three defensive saves in a critical series late in the half to help Oswego State cling to a scoreless game at the half.
The first quality scoring opportunity for either squad came at the 46:30 mark when the Lakers were awarded a penalty shot. Freshman
Ashley Collins ripped a shot towards the right post, but Golden Eagle goalie Kasey Schreiner lunged to her left to make the save with her blocker. Brockport finally got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute when a scramble in front of the net produced a goal by Jackie Massoni with the assist going to Kelly-Ann Henry.
The goal seemed to take the wind out of Oswego State's sails, but head coach Brandi Ostrander called a timeout with 7:05 remaining to regroup her troops. It worked, as the Lakers seized momentum for the first game and began to apply heavy pressure in their offensive end.
Oswego State had several shots narrowly miss wide until
Alyssa Hare netted her first goal of the season after another scramble in front of the goalie following a penalty corner. The Lakers continued to turn up intensity, but were unable to score before the horn sounded.
Minutes into overtime, Brockport was whistled for a yellow card, forcing the Golden Eagles to play a player down. Less than a minute later, Roezter pounced on a ball that rolled through the crease to give Oswego State the big conference win, and avenge a 4-1 non-conference loss to Brockport ten days earlier.
Scharfe ended the game with four saves, while her counterpart, Schreiner posted seven saves in the losing effort.
The Lakers will face Geneseo, which defeated Cortland 2-1 in overtime, for the top spot in the league standings Saturday at 1 p.m. in Oswego.
