Jonathan Kuracina's goal in the 55th minute propelled Oswego State to a 2-1 win over Fredonia Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in Oswego. The win moves the Lakers to 5-6-1 overall and 3-2 in SUNYAC play while the loss drops the Blue Devils to 5-8-0 and 3-2 in conference play. The teams are now tied for fourth place in the standings as they fight to remain in the top six in order to clinch a post-season birth.
Fredonia struck first in the 26th minute when John Grabowski lofted a pass up the center of the field to Ryan O'Donnell who evaded a charging
Matt Wopperer and finished the ball into the open net. O'Donnell had another golden opportunity four minutes later when he missed just outside the right post. Oswego State answered just before intermission as
Bryan Pacchiana fired a cross that deflected into the net off a Fredonia defender with only 11.7 seconds left, knotting the game at one at the half.
To start the second half the Lakers subbed in Kuracina, isolating him at the front of the offense as they tried to lob the ball forward to him. In the 55th minute he corralled a loose ball, bringing the ball to his feet where he flicked the ball over oncoming Blue Devils goalkeeper Bobby McGinnis for what proved to be the eventual game-winner. The game got exceptionally physical in a seven-minute span from the 69th to 76th minutes, in which five yellow cards were administered. Oswego State solidified its defense to stave off a Fredonia comeback bid for the key conference victory.
McGinnis finished with four saves for the Blue Devils while Wopperer stopped nine shots in the win for the Lakers. Oswego State finishes the regular season with four games on the road beginning with a 3 p.m. tilt Friday at Brockport.
