The Oswego State baseball team opened its home and conference schedule with a pair of losses to Cortland by the scores of 11-2 and 7-2 at Laker Baseball Field on Saturday afternoon. The two losses ended a six-game winning streak for the Lakers, who moved to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in SUNYAC play, while the Red Dragons improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Game one Oswego State starter Brady Farkas (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) allowed four earned runs and ten hits, while walking two batters over five innings of work. The Lakers scored both of their runs in the bottom half of the third courtesy of a Cortland error. First baseman Dave Mazzullo (So., Rochester, N.Y.) drove the lone Oswego State run of the game. The Red Dragons received a solid performance on the mound from Mike Assmann, who went 6.1 innings, allowed no earned runs on four hits, and struck out nine. Reliever Brandon DeRosa surrendered one hit over the final 2.2 innings to go along with three strikeouts.
In game two, Cortland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, which would prove to be all the run support it needed. Oswego State loaded the bases with no outs in its half of the fourth inning, but only managed to score one run. The Lakers notched ten hits, but were unable to deliver the key hits as they stranded 15 runners. Oswego State pitcher Andy Salvatore (Sr., Poughkeepise, N.Y.) went seven innings, allowing five runs on 13 hits, and striking out five. Red Dragon starter Adam Brown worked 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and picking up seven strikeouts.
The Lakers will travel to St. Lawrence on Wednesday and Mount St. Mary's on Thursday before returning home to play SUNYIT on Monday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
