Baseball Splits Doubleheader With New Paltz

Mike Tarnowski
The Oswego State bats exploded for 10 runs en route to a 10-1 game one win over host New Paltz before being silenced in a 2-1 loss in the second game on Monday. Freshman Mike Tarnowski (Dunkirk, N.Y.) led the way for the Lakers at the plate going a combined 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Oswego State moved to 13-9 overall and 2-6 in the SUNYAC standings, while New Paltz went to 15-12 overall and 2-4 in the league.

With the game scoreless heading into the third inning, the Lakers capitalized on a two-out Hawk error when Tarnowski belted a two-run home run to go ahead 2-0.  Oswego State strung together three consecutive base hits in the following frame en route to a three-run inning to grab a 5-0 lead.  New Paltz tallied its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Clinton Boettcher crossed home plate after a triple.

However, the Lakers responded with three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the eighth for the 10-1 victory.  Tarnowski finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Rafael Cordero (Jr., Utica, N.Y.) was 2-for-5 with two RBI.  Marc Peterson (Jr., Geneseo, N.Y.) went the distance on the mound for the win scattering five hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Game two proved to be a pitchers' duel as both offenses were held scoreless through five innings until Kris Prikazsky (So., Endicott, N.Y.) led off the sixth with a solo shot to put Oswego State ahead 1-0.  The score stood through seven innings before New Paltz tied the game at 1-1 after a two-out Laker error in the eighth.  The Hawks led off the bottom half of the ninth with a walk by Joel Judson followed by a pair of singles to load the bases.  Matt O'Neill then hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving in Judson for the walk-off win.

Andy Salvatore (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) suffered the hard-luck loss allowing nine hits and one earned run over the course of 8.2 innings, while striking out two and walking six.  New Paltz pitcher Chris Chismar handcuffed the Oswego State bats by striking out 20 over the course of the game to receive the win.

The Lakers will play a non-conference doubleheader at Cazenovia with the first pitch at 2 p.m.
