Baseball Posts Series Split At Keuka

Andrew Lazzaro
The Oswego State baseball team received production up and down the lineup to help the Lakers defeat Keuka 14-7 to salvage a series split at Keuka Park on Thursday. In game one of the twinbill, Oswego State nearly overcame an early deficit, but came up just short in an 8-6 loss. Andrew Lazzaro (So., Oswego, N.Y.) put together an impressive stat line going 4-for-7 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and four RBI. The Lakers moved to 17-13 overall, while the Storm dropped to 7-18.

Oswego State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Keuka answered back with seven runs in the bottom half of the frame to go up 7-1.  The Lakers gradually chipped away at the deficit until they trailed 7-4 at the end of five frames.  However, the Storm tacked on another run in the sixth for a four-run edge.

Oswego State mounted a late charge in the top of the seventh scoring two runs to make the score 8-6, but was unable to complete the comeback as it suffered the loss.  Andy Salvatore (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) recorded the loss after surrendering nine hits for eight runs, only one of which was earned, and walking six batters in six innings.  Jason Kirkum earned the win going the distance on the mound giving up six runs on eight hits, while striking out seven and walking six.  Lazzaro was 2-for-3 at the dish scoring and driving in two runs.  Dan Slate (Fr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Brooks Beatty (Jr., Atwater, Calif.) also recorded two hits each.

The momentum created at the end of game one by the Lakers carried over into the second game, as Oswego State scored in each of the first six innings.  Coach Paino's squad held a 3-0 advantage before Keuka got on the scoreboard in the second to make it a two-run contest.  However, the Lakers went on to touch home plate six more times in their next three at-bats for a 9-1 lead before the Storm recorded two runs in the fifth.  Again, Oswego State quickly ended the rally by tacking on five more runs in the top of the sixth frame to go ahead 14-3.  Keuka scored four times in the sixth and the seventh, but fell 14-7.

Each defense struggled with errors as the Lakers committed four and the Storm committed six.  Brady Farkas (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) recorded the complete-game win for Oswego State allowing four earned runs on ten hits.  Kyle Sherin picked up the loss throwing four innings giving up eight unearned runs on seven hits.  Kris Prikazsky (So., Endicott, N.Y.), Slate, Lazzaro, and Beatty recorded two hits apiece, while the quartet combined to drive in eight runs.  Matt Deveney (Sr., North Syracuse, N.Y.) also had a solid game with three runs scored and three RBI.

Oswego State will be busy in the upcoming days as it will travel to Oneonta for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before returning home for non-conference doubleheaders versus Clarkson and SUNY Canton on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
