Women's Lacrosse Falls To Ninth-Ranked Cortland 17-4

Box Score

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team could not continue its offensive showcase in its first SUNYAC contest of the season against ninth-ranked Cortland. The visiting Red Dragons dropped the Lakers 17-4 at Laker Field following a strong first-half performance on Saturday afternoon. Oswego State fell to 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while ninth-ranked Cortland improved to 6-1 and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

Oswego State was never able to fall into its rhythm offensively.  Despite holding an early 2-1 lead—with goals from Marisa Audley and Jessica Zenzel—the Lakers could not get anything going from that point forward.  The Red Dragons evened the score at two apiece, but that would be as close as Oswego State would get for the remainder of the contest.

With nearly 24 minutes remaining in the first half, Cortland took the lead and never looked back.  The Red Dragons went on a 10-0 run and headed into halftime with a 12-2 lead.

The Lakers began the second period with some hope and quickly netted two more goals.  It would not be enough however, as Cortland proved to be too strong.  Game-leading scorer Maria DiFato scored three of Cortland's five goals in the second period to give the Red Dragons a 15-4 advantage.  DiFato finished with five goals and one assist followed by Nicki Mahoney, who added four goals and one assist for the Red Dragons.

Cortland added two more goals to solidify the 17-4 victory.  The Lakers struggles were due largely to Cortland's powerful defense.  Oswego State took just eight shots on goal compared to the Red Dragons' 32.  Audley led the Lakers with two goals, while Zenzel and Maria Martusewicz contributed one each.

The Lakers will have time to recuperate before they travel to Keuka College on Thursday, April 8 for a 4 p.m. start.
