The Oswego State field hockey team held a three-goal lead at halftime, but Utica scored four unanswered goals in the final 35 minutes to hand the Lakers a 4-3 loss on Wednesday in Oswego. The Pioneers scored three goals during a span of 4:09 in the second half to tie the score before Mallory Mariano netted the game-winning goal at the 57:28 mark. Oswego State dropped to 1-2 overall, while Utica improved to 2-1 overall.
Coach Brandi Ostrander's squad dictated play at the onset and struck early in the contest when
Jess Felice (So., Endicott, N.Y.) threaded a pass from right to left to
Taylor Stein (So., Endwell, N.Y.), who was waiting at the left post to pound home the goal.
Sara Budde (Sr., Appleton, N.Y.) quickly extended the lead to two goals after she received a pass from
Brittany Roetzer (Sr., Akron, N.Y.) at 9:45 in the first half.
The Lakers continued to apply pressure as the rain started to come down, but that didn't slow down Oswego State.
Kelly Collins (Jr., Fairport, N.Y.) notched her third goal of the season with
Katie Mazuchowski (Jr., Tonawanda, N.Y.) earning the assist to send the Lakers into intermission with a 3-0 lead.
Halftime was exactly what the Pioneers needed to regroup. Freshman Rebecca Corsones started the comeback for Utica when she scored at 43:08 in the second half. The Pioneers knotted the score at three goals apiece just over four minutes later with goals coming off the sticks of Kim Martin and Sarah Keller. Mallory Mariano struck the final blow when she scored her fourth goal of the year in the 58th minute. The Lakers made a late charge, but were unable to capitalize to send the time into overtime.
Oswego State goalkeeper
Jamie Scharfe (Sr., Webster, N.Y.) compiled 11 saves in the game, while her counterpart, Monica Storms stopped five shots. Utica also held an advantage in penalty corners at 19 compared to 11 for the Lakers.
Oswego State will travel to Ithaca to face the Golden Bombers on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Pioneers will host Hamilton on Saturday at 1 p.m. as well.
