Late Collins Goal Pushes Field Hockey Past Oneonta 3-2

Box Score

After being burned by a late goal on Friday, Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) provided the late-game heroics for the Oswego State field hockey team when she scored with 1:39 remaining to help give the Lakers a 3-2 victory over visiting Oneonta Saturday afternoon.

It marked the first conference win for Oswego State, which improved to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the league, despite being out-shoot by the Red Dragons, 22-10.  Oneonta dropped to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in the SUNYAC.  The win also marked the first time that the Lakers had defeated the Red Dragons since 2008.

Collins provided a quick lift for the Lakers from the opening whistle as she scored her fifth goal of the season 1:21 into the contest.  However, minutes later, Oneonta seemed to take control of the frame, as it controlled possession time until its effort paid off in the 24th minute.  Megan Warning leveled the match at the 23:51 mark for her fourth goal.  Less than 90 seconds later, the Red Dragons took the lead with Ashley Morgan's seventh marker of the year.

Oneonta seemed to have completely seized momentum in the game until freshman Lindsey Spatola (Holbrook, N.Y.) posted her first collegiate goal eight minutes before intermission to knot the match at 2-2.  The teams went into the break tied despite the Red Dragons holding a 10-6 edge in shots and an 11-5 margin in penalty corners.

Oneonta came out reinvigorated in the second half, getting off 12 shots and earning seven penalty corners, but were unable to end the tie.  As time dwindled, Collins took a shot that went wide of the cage.  On the ensuing clear attempt by the Red Dragons, Collins intercepted an errant pass, dribbled into the circle, and laced a shot past keeper Tess Tracy with 1:39 to play for her second goal of the contest.

Oneonta put together one final charge as it was awarded a penalty corner in the final minute.  However, Oswego State goalie Julie Janusz (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) stopped Morgan's shot for her 11th save of the game to preserve the win.

Collins has been on fire as of late, as she has scored five goals in the last four games.

The Lakers continue their current homestand on Tuesday when they host Elmira at 4 p.m.
