Box Score
After honoring six seniors and taking a 2-0 lead, the Oswego State men's soccer team saw its season come to a close with a 3-2 overtime loss to Cortland Saturday at Laker Field.
The Lakers took a quick lead when one of their senior captains, Bryan Paccachiana, (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) was able to get a clean shot while battling a lot of defensive traffic in front of the net less than five minutes into the game.
Eighteen minutes later,
Mike Naab (So., Ontario, N.Y.) lofted a pass from the corner and
Brendan Beisner (So., West Islip, N.Y.) ripped a shot to the left post for a 2-0 Laker lead.
The up-and-down game continued with Cortland scoring for the first time on a long shot by Chris McBride with 13 minutes left in the half.
Then, with three minutes remaining in the first half, Oswego State goalkeeper
Pat Breen (Palmyra, N.Y.) was forced to charge a ball and made contact with the Cortland attacker inside the box, forcing a red card and a penalty kick for the Red Dragons. E.J. Reutemann converted the chance and tied the game before the half.
Both Oswego State's
P.J. Goodwin (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Cortland's Tim Beauvais made big saves in the second half to keep the game tied. The best of those saves may have come with under seven minutes to play when Goodwin pushed a penalty kick wide left. Goodwin made seven saves in the second half alone with senior defender
Lucas Pettit (Scipio Center, N.Y.) making a team save on an open look.
After playing down two players for the final 30 minutes of the second half, Oswego State could not hold off Cortland any longer. After another great save by diving save by Goodwin, Cortland's Chris McBride scored the game-winner six minutes into overtime. It was the ninth overtime game for Cortland (3-8-5) this season, tying the NCAA Division III record for overtime games in a season, and its first victory in those game.
Oswego State finished the season with a 5-10-1 record and honored seniors
German Collazo (Freeport, N.Y.), Pettit, Pacchiana, Max Gulliani (New York, N.Y.),
Ben Nix (Painted Post, N.Y.) and
Jake Honan (Rochester, N.Y.) before the final game of their careers.
