The Oswego State baseball team was unable to protect a one-run lead at the seventh inning stretch, as a two-run home run gave St. Lawrence a 4-3 lead en route to a 6-3 victory at Tom Fay Field in Canton on Tuesday. The loss dropped the Lakers to 8-3 on the season, while the victory pushed St. Lawrence to 4-9 on the season.
St. Lawrence pitcher Kyle Donaldson earned his second win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings with three strikeouts, two hits, and a walk. Oswego State's Mark Schaper struck out four batters in six innings of work, but allowed eight hits and five earned runs in his first decision of the season. Dustin Lefave did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.
Laker first baseman Dan Erne led the team with three hits and was joined by shortstop Tyler Baker with an RBI each. Meanwhile, St. Lawrence's Khifer O'Conner drove in three runs for the Saint effort.
Oswego State scored in the top of the second inning when Mike Stark grounded into a double play that brought catcher Dan Maloney in from third. A second run came on the next play as Baker doubled to right center field, driving in Erne from third to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Oswego State tacked on another run an inning later to when Ed Charles touched home plate following a RBI-single by Erne.
St. Lawrence cut the deficit in its half of the third inning when O'Connor connected on a two-run double to make the score 3-2. Both offenses remained silent until the bottom of the seventh inning.
Two batters into the bottom half of the seventh, Brian Magoveny hit a two-run blast over the left field fence that gave the Saints the lead for good at 4-3. St. Lawrence added insurance runs during the frame, as the Saints held a 6-3 advantage by the end of the inning.
The Lakers mounted a rally in the top of the eighth by loading the bases following an defensive miscue, a single, and a walk with one out. However, Oswego State was unable to pick up the key hit as it left the bases loaded. Scott Buniak led off the ninth with a single in the final Laker at-bat, but the squad came up short in the end.
Oswego State look to rebound on Wednesday during a doubleheader at home against Utica College starting at 2 p.m.
